Do we NEED a GPS hack program?

Since resetting my phone back to a completely default configuration, I've learned that the newly-released Microsoft GPS Activator program did absolutely nothing for my phone.

I hadn't installed the MoDaCo activator because (a) I knew it worked with "GPS Test" and such, and (b) I wanted to see if the Microsoft tool would do what it claimed.

Well, I configured the GPS unit to COM4/19200 but "GPS Test" wouldn't lock onto any satellites, and the "Google Maps" app wouldn't initialize the GPS at all whether I told it to autodetect the GPS Unit or manually configure it for COM4/19200.

So I'm installing the MoDaCo activator again.
